  1. Please guide me on how to cultivate ginger.
First select a good variety of ginger to start with, like Suprabha, Suruchi, Surabhi, etc. Ginger thrives best in well drained, loamy soil. The period from the month of April to May is good for sowing the ginger crop. The effect is better if crops are sown immediately after the rains.

Per hectare around 20-25 quintal seeds (rhizomes) are required. To make sure that the seeds are free from infection, they are to be soaked for an hour in a solution of 0.2% Ethane and 0.1% Babestene per litre of water and dried in shade. The seeds are to be sown at a depth of 4 cms. The distance between the cropping lines should be 25 to 30 cms, and that between the crops should be 15-20 cms.

A month before sowing starts, apply 25-30 tonnes of bio-manure to the field. The following fertilizer mix is to be applied per hectare of land every 20-25 days - Phosphorus (150-200 D A P), Potash (150 kgs) and Nitrogen (100-120 kgs of ??? ???).

Irrigation is not required during rains. However if you wish, you may still irrigate your plot at an interval of 15 to 20 days.

  2. What fodder should I feed my animal in the summer season to increase its milk production?
"The best fodder for summer season is Chari, which can be given to a milch animal to increase its milk production. The good varieties of Chari are Pusa Chari - 1 and Pusa Chari – 2, which can you sow for fodder purpose."

  3. Please suggest me some good milch breeds of goat.
"Some good milch breeds of goat are:  Jamunapari, Anglo Nubian and Saanen."

  4. What treatment do I use to control external parasites, like lice in sheep?
"For the control of ectoparasitic infestations like lice in sheep, use a complete bath with Butox @ 2ml per litre of water."

  5. I would like to take up bee keeping. Please guide me on the process.
"If you want to take up bee keeping, you may start around the time when flowers start to bloom in the field. This is in fact the best time and yields the best honey production. Bee keeping is also not very expensive. You can get a beehive box built for Rs. 750 only; to make 15 to 20 such boxes you will need to spend around 10,000 rupees.

Started on a small scale, this offers as a profitable business proposition for a small farmer. Information on different species of honeybees can be had from the district agriculture officer in your area. A popular variety of bee is Apis indica.

Before you start your business it is essential that you undergo some training in bee keeping; starting a practice without the required training may be dangerous. To know about training programmes in your area you may contact your district agriculture office or the Gram Sevak / VDO in your village.

In a training programme you will learn how to build and arrange the beehive boxes properly, place bee colonies in the frames, various honey extraction methods, etc. You will also learn about how and where to sell the honey produce and at what rate."
